Adult asthma–what does age have to do with it?
If you were an adult when diagnosed with asthma, that does make a difference in how you handle the disease. Your first asthma attack can be terrifying, especially if you live alone and are alone when it strikes.
But, once you’ve received your diagnosis, there are a few advantages to an adult diagnosis:
- You’re in control. Since you’re an adult, you can learn to manage your symptoms, taking full control and responsibility for your day. There are a lot of things you can do to manage your asthma and lessen your symptoms and, as an adult, it’s easier to schedule the time and prioritize your treatment.
- You understand about consequences. Kids have more trouble with delayed gratification and with understanding that there are consequences of certain actions. For instance. I’ve found that if I spend all night cuddled up with my laptop, working away until past 11 p.m., the next day I struggle with my asthma symptoms all day long–wheezing, coughing, and feeling completely exhausted and weak from difficulty breathing. No thanks! When I turn off the computer by 10 p.m., I can count on feeling my best the next day. Kids would have trouble making and remembering this correlation, but being an adult, I’m well aware of it. I bet you can think of examples with your own asthma diagnosis that prove it’s a bit easier to be aware now that you’re a grown up, even if it doesn’t make making the responsible decision any more enjoyable.
- You’re willing to try “gross” asthma treatments if they make you better. Remember wrinkling your nose at cough syrup and other icky medicines as a kid? I remember pretending I wasn’t as sick as I was to get out of a mouthful of yuck. Now that I’m an adult, I’ve learned that medicine is usually only gross for a minute or two and when it makes me feel better, that lasts all day. So, I’m willing to suffer for a moment or two to feel better, and I bet you are too.
So, while it’s certainly not the best news to receive an adult asthma diagnosis, there are definitely some perks to being diagnosed as an adult instead of as a kid. If you were diagnosed as an adult, what have you found to be the benefits?
