Allergic Asthma Treat: Eat an Apple!
When I started looking into what I could do to reduce my allergic asthma symptoms, I found *a lot* of information. And, let’s face it, some of it didn’t make one iota of difference in my asthma symptoms. But, some of what I discovered did indeed help me breathe more easily and this is one of those things.
I started eating an apple every day. Yes, it gets boring. And yes, there are days when I skip it or am sorely tempted to. But, I’ll tell you this: I’ve been eating an apple a day for about a year now and those times when I run out of apples I definitely notice a difference in my breathing. In fact, even my mom notices! See, when I start having trouble breathing, it shows up most with people I’m talking to over the phone, and when I’ve gone about a week without eating an apple, I start to wheeze when talking to my mom. Because she’s a fabulous mom, she often brings me apples that same day ;-).
Like I said, it does get boring, but it makes such a big difference. And there are lots of options for eating your apples. You can have an apple with some peanut butter as a quick and easy afternoon snack. Not only will it help relieve your allergic asthma symptoms, but it’ll also boost your energy. (Be sure to get a peanut butter without added sugar for the best quality energy boost.)
You can also core the apple and stuff it with raisens or dried cranberries. Bake it in the oven and you’ll have a really yummy treat full of good-for-you-stuff. Or, you can chop up apple sticks and eat them with ranch dressing. You can cut the apple into chunks and mix them with cottage cheese, plain yogurt, or oatmeal. I like to make an oatmeal baked apple crisp, too, which has sliced apples under a layer of a flour, oatmeal, sugar and butter mixture. (That should probably be done sparringly, but it’s really yummy!) Even all American apple pie might help relieve your allergic asthma symptoms ;-).
Give it about a month to see if an apple a day helps to relieve your allergic asthma symptoms, and remember to eat all of the apple (well, not the stem or core, of course, but do eat the skin). And, as always, check in with your doctor before following my or anyone else’s nutrition or exercise suggestions. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go slice up my afternoon apple so that I can keep relieving my allergic asthma symptoms!
