Five Asthma-Fighting Strategies that Work
Today, let’s talk about how you can fight asthma and breathe better starting right now. If you’ve been reading here for awhile, you know that I’m all about natural treatments that make you feel better, fast, while also improving your long-term breathing. So, based on my research, and my own personal experience, here are five asthma-fighting strategies that have worked for me.
1) Drink a hot lemon drink every morning. That’s right, to fight asthma effectively, put two tablespoons of lemon juice into a cup of hot or warm water. No sugar or other sweetener (and no cheating). I like to drink this with a straw to protect my teeth from the acidic juice, but that’s up to you. Not only is this thought to be good for breathing, but it also is thought to have digestive benefits as well.
2) Change the sheets more often. You spend a third of your life in bed, and it’s a place where shed skin cells and other allergens collect. Breathing in all of that isn’t good for your allergic asthma. So, wash your sheets at least once a week (and preferably twice) in hot water to rinse out all the icky stuff and fight asthma.
3) Eat red onions. They’ve got lots of good stuff for your breathing. My favorite is to slice up red onions and cook them in a tiny bit of olive oil and then add cauliflower and bread crumbs and cook it all together until the cauliflower is soft. This is delicious, good for you, and a helpful ally to in fighting asthma.
4) Eat apples and cranberries. Both are great for your lung health, and I like to mix them up together because then I’m eating something that’s really, really great to fight asthma and keep my breathing easy. Turn them into muffins or a cran-apple-oatmeal crumble for something for the sweet tooth that’s also good at reducing wheezing!
5) Practice yogic breathing. This is where you breathe in through one nostril at a time. To do it, close your right nostril (pinch the side of your nose) and breathe in and then out once. Then, close your left nostril and breathe in and out once. Back to right for an in breath and an out breath; then left. Repeat five times to start and work up to a “set” of ten. You may feel a bit dizzy or light headed after doing this the first time or two, so make sure that you remain seated and that you can sit still for a few moments after. This is great for relaxing and for fighting asthma.
So, there you have it, five things you can start doing today to fight asthma and breathe better. It doesn’t get much easier than adding in three foods to your regular eating habits, so feel free to start there if that makes sense. And, there are few things easier than drinking hot lemon water each morning, right?
Now that you’ve read my roundup of five asthma-fighting strategies that work, tell me, what’s your favorite way to improve your lung health and breathe easier? I’d love to hear what’s working for you to fight asthma!
