Reader Question: Do allergy air filters really make a difference?

After posting my roundup of allergy air filters, I received a question from a reader via email. Sasha wrote: “Jess, I’ve always heard that filters were a good idea, but I’m wondering if that’s just marketing hype. Have you really found them to make a difference in your allergies?”

Thanks for writing, Sasha! (And btw, if you have a question, feel free to post it in the comments or email it to me.) What I’ve found is that the filters I purchased have made a big difference, but I’d imagine it’ll depend if your allergies are exacerbated by the common indoor culprits like dust, dander, and mold (which every home has, no matter how clean you keep things). For me, I don’t just have outdoor allergies, and the indoor gunk definitely impacts my breathing.

The allergy air filters I picked up (I actually wound up with two different models) make the biggest difference for me at night. Whereas I used to have trouble breathing the moment my head hit the pillow, now I’m a lot more comfortable all throughout the night and I breathe easier because of the filter. If you have more trouble breathing at night as well, and you’re a light sleeper like I am, heed my warning about noisy allergy air filters and pick up one that’s really quiet for best results.

How about you? Have you brought home a filter yet? And has it helped improve your breathing and reduce lung congestion? I’d love to hear which model you got and how it’s working for you! And, Sasha, if you decide to pick up an allergy air filter, make sure to check back in and update us on how it’s working for you!!

Hiya! I'm Jess. I was diagnosed with allergy-induced asthma about two years ago.

Since then, I've found that my asthma symptoms are a great barometer of just how well I'm taking care of myself. On days when I practice self care, I breathe easier than on days when I don't.

Now that I've gotten a handle on my own symptoms I wanted to create a place where I could share what's worked for me and hear from *you* on what helps to treat your allergic asthma symptoms. Welcome to my site. I'm looking forward to getting to know you.
